Ancient, natural, modern and engineering wonders have been explored this half term in our theme teach lessons. Students have travelled around the world looking at a different continent each week to discover the Wonders of the World they hold.
Europe
We started the theme off in Europe, where students learnt about the Roman Colosseum in Rome as well as some Greek mythology. We can see below the Ancient Greek view of the world:
Africa
In lessons about the Great Pyramid of Giza, we built a scaled down version of the pyramid and compared it to how small a person would be standing next to it. Then we were able to imagine building an ancient wonder standing so tall with such heavy bricks!
North America
In the USA a modern wonder of the world is the Golden Gate Bridge. Students looked at the features of bridges and made their own structures out of dry spaghetti and marshmallows! Then a durability test was done, checking which would last best in an earthquake.
South America
The Paricutin Volcano is a dormant volcano in Mexico. Students learnt about how and why volcanos erupt then took part in an experiment using bicarbonate of soda (alkali) and vinegar (acid) to create carbon dioxide bubbles.
Also in South America between Brazil and Paraguay is the Itaipu Dam. The demonstration you can see above showed the students how a dam works - the water came out of the different holes at different speeds.
Asia
Students researched the Hanging Gardens of Babylon - an ancient wonder of the world. Based on that research, they worked together to design a replica of the gardens.
In India the Taj Mahal is considered a new wonder of the world. Students were able to use the Google Expedition app to have a close look at it and pick out the features they liked the most. Then they added those features into their own building designs which they built with paper.
Rest of the World
Another amazing wonder of the world is the Aurora Skylines. Students created beautiful oil pastel artwork.
