Life in 20th Century Britain - Remembering the Great War

Our theme this half term is about what life was like throughout the 20th century. One of the weeks was dedicated to learning about World War 1, which ended 100 years ago this November. Students looked at war poetry and learnt about the Battle of the Somme.

We visited the local cenotaph and a statue of Thomas 'Todger' Alfred Jones, a soldier from Runcorn who was awarded a Victoria Cross in the Great War.

As part of this theme our school visited the Imperial War Museum in Manchester to see the exhibition, 'Lest We Forget'. The exhibition explored how the war has been remembered and the ways in which people have commemorated the dead – from the intensely personal, private rituals to the sombre national ceremonies. The visit really helped our students to experience the impact that the Great War had on so many people.
